Fish shed

Fish shed

The fish shed borders the rapids field on the northern side. It is used for storing fish for a short time. With the grilling hut the fish shed forms the heart of the built cultural environment of Kukkolankoski rapids. On the roof there is a clock tower which tells the working fisherman the time of changing shifts and sharing the whitefish.

There are two doors: one leads to the whitefish side, the other to the salmon side. The salmon side is smaller and no longer in use as cold storage. In the whitefish side there is an insulated separated cold space where the whitefish of the fishing shift is kept until the sharing in the evening. In the olden days the space was kept cold with ice and snow through the summer, today it is basically a big refrigerator.

Sharing of the whitefish happens in front of the fish shed. There is also a steelyard balance to weigh the fish and an ice maker in the shed. Read more about sharing the whitefish here!
